Allergy Friendly Cookbook for Kids

I found this great recipe book on Amazon. I bought it for my friend and she bought one for me. I haven't had a lot of time to try all of the recipes, because it came at an extra busy time in my life. However, the ones I have tried have been great. It contains more than 150 recipes that are wheat, gluten, nut, egg, and dairy free (as well as low in sugar).  Some of the recipes are: chicken nuggets, pizza bites, the very best spaghetti, sloppy joe veggie skillet, fruit bars, baked veggie nachos, happy birthday cake, homemade marshmallows, "cream"sicle cake, and frosted brownies.

Here is what someone had to say about it on Amazon. " Great cookbook! I have been cooking allergy free for my son for approx 2 years now. He is allergic to eggs, soy, dairy, wheat and tree nuts. It is hard to find a cookbook that is sensitive to all of the top 8 allergens. This one does, with the exception of just a couple of recipes. I purchased this cookbook to find some new ideas. I have started to notice that the varying cookbooks tend to rely on one specific type of gluten free flour. This one is rice flours and tapioca flours which can have a little grittier taste. The last cookbook I used it was oat flour (Sophie Safe) and those recipes tend to crumble. It is nice to have a few new recipes and to try new ingredients to see which ones work for you. I still love Sophie Safe, but am enjoying this cookbook just as much! If you cook for someone with allergies, you know how challenging it can be. I would recommend this cookbook highly!! Good luck!!"

Cookbook I Want To Get

Instead of sugar plums dancing in my head, I'm dreaming of delights from this cookbook: Silvana's Gluten-free and Dairy-free Kitchen:Timeless Favorites Transformed. She is founding editor of Every Day for Rachel Ray, and is the creator of one of my favorite cookbooks: Cooking for Isaiah.  It's not everyday you find a cookbook that is gluten-free, dairy free, and has both baking and meal recipes included. Her ideas are fun, interesting, and truly delightful.  Here is what a reviewer on Amazon had to say about it.

By G. Shields

I've been gluten free for about 9 years now, and I can't tell you how many recipes and flour combinations I have tried - mostly without success, at least in the bread department. I wasn't sure about buying another gluten free cookbook, but decided to try it out anyway. I wanted to make the pizza first since bread recipes are the hardest (in my humble opinion) to re-create gluten free. The pizza was delicious and has been the first gluten free bread that I have tried that actually emulates its wheat counterparts. Buy the book! I'm sure you won't be disappointed. There is a wide variety of recipes: pizza, doughnuts, risotto, pumpkin dumplings, coffee cake, etc.
This is what Amazon says about it: "The founding editor of Every Day with Rachael Ray reinvents America's favorite dishes for a gluten- and dairy-free world — no compromises to flavor or texture accepted.
“The fact that everything she makes is gluten-free is astonishing.” —Food & Wine
When doctors diagnosed Silvana Nardone’s son with intolerances to gluten and dairy, she embarked on a quest to develop dishes for the toughest critics of all: her kids. To do so, she drew on her experience as a professional baker and her work in magazine test kitchens. She deciphered labels and tested obsessively. The result: dishes that taste exactly like their supermarket, bakery, and take-out counterparts, from Cinnamon-Swirl Pancakes to Crispy Chicken Taquitos to Baked Ham-and-Cheese Manicotti. Every mom on the block will want the recipes for her high-rising, light sandwich loaf, deep-dish pizza, and chocolate-chip cookie dough ice cream sandwiches.
Silvana shares every last secret she has learned over the years from her formulations of gluten-free all-purpose flour; pancake, waffle, and biscuit mix; homemade and rich-tasting nondairy substitutes for milk, yogurt, and ricotta; and other essentials that are key to making the best food possible."

My New Cookbook

For my birthday my son bought me this glorious cookbook that was on my wishlist on Amazon.  I think I know exactly why he bought it for me. Besides being the biggest fan of my cooking he has an incurable sweet tooth (it's hard to say exactly who he got it from ;0))  I see a lot of yummy things in the upcoming year.  I must say my biggest surprise after looking through this book is that these recipes look so good and are egg free. They are gluten, wheat, dairy, eggs, soy, peanuts, tree nuts and sesame free.

Here are some rave reviews. It even got 4.5 out 5 stars on Amazon. The Allergen-Free Baker’s Handbook is...a triumph for the food-allergic community. ...This book is a goldmine for special-diet bakers—particularly for parents of newly diagnosed kids who don’t know where to begin.”

Review of a Cookbook

I checked out this cookbook from the library and was very pleased with every recipe that I tried. I had to return it, but I liked it so much that I am going to either check it out again or buy it. She uses a lot of teff which isn't my favorite, but other than that I really liked it. I especially liked her easy and delicious dinner ideas.  The recipes often had just a handful of ingredients. She has gorgeous photos that make the recipes even more tempting. I'd really recommend it. In fact, I have suggested it to a couple of friends already!

Here is a review:
"If there is one cookbook in my kitchen the whole family uses, it's this one. Tammy has put together easy recipes that make fabulous gluten free/allergy free food. And we all know, it's ALL about the food!"—Nadine Grzeskowiak, RN CEN, GlutenfreeRN.com

Gluten-free Website and Book

Have you heard of the "Gluten-free Girl"? She has a great bunch of recipes on her blog here, a book about her journey to discovering she had celiac disease (see my side panel), a cookbook (go here ) and another soon to be released cookbook. At times when I have been discouraged about changing my eating habits, she has inspired me.

This cookbook is free on Amazon today!

I have written this post (below) previously on how much I like this cookbook. Today is your lucky day, because it is now free on Amazon (kindle version). You can get kindle books for your PC or android as well. Go here to get it!

Revision: I bought this cookbook and a bread maker recently. I am more than delighted with the results. I am already having fun tweaking recipes to get new flavors. My family members are loving my experiments! I ended up getting the Cuisnart CBK-200 which has a gluten free setting that is completely compatible with the cookbook below. There is nothing like fresh moist bread with little labor and little expense!

I just discovered one of my all time favorite cookbook authors has made one for working with the Zojirushi bread machine. This sounds like a dream to have a bread machine, and compatible GF recipes to throw into it. It's called Gluten-free Baking Classics for the Bread Machine by Annalise Roberts. Go here to find out more. The bread machine she mentions costs approximately between $180 and $200 on Amazon depending on if you buy the small one that makes a one pound loaf or the larger one that makes a two pound one. They both got 4.5 stars out of 5. It's not cheap, but throwing in a few ingredients and having hot loafs baking with very minimal effort sounds incredible.
This is what Amazon says about her cookbook.
"Acclaimed author Analise Roberts developed these simple, foolproof recipes for the Zojirushi bread machine. Roberts' outstanding recipes range from simple and satisfying Basic Sandwich Bread to complex and scrumptious Golden Italian Bread with Raisins and Fennel. She also offers ethnic breads like Challah and Babka and seasonal delights such as the irresistible Holiday Breakfast Bread. Included are loaves, like Sundried Tomato Roasted Garlic Bread, that contain no eggs or dairy products."

Going Dairy Free?

Then this book is for you. Not only does it provide amazing recipes for substitutes (some egg subs as well) but it goes into the difference between casein protein intolerance and lactose intolerance. Silvanna's All Purpose Flour Blend

I love this cookbook. It is the one that I am using a ton this week!

This is from "Cooking for Isaiah" by Silvanna Nardone, Rachel Ray's editor in chief. It has recently become my all time favorite cookbook. She says you can use this combo of flours instead of regular flour. Her cookbook is filled with great recipes that use it. If you haven't yet, I'd highly suggest getting this cookbook! It has both great baking recipes and meal recipes that are gluten and dairy free. I have learned a lot from her already. Her pancake flour, which uses this flour in it, makes the best pancakes I have had since going gluten free. I will share her flour here, and then her pancake flour next. Go to my side bar if you want to find it!

6 cups white rice flour
3 cups tapioca flour
1 1/2 cups potato starch
1 TBS salt
2 TBS xanthan gum

New Cookbook!

Two of my all time favorite cookbook authors are coming out with another cookbook that you can pre-order on Amazon. I am thinking another giveaway might be in order. Stay tuned for details.  For now, here's the skinny on this book! Go here for more info. The authors both have their education in nutrition and their knowledge of food is really something.  I have yet to follow one of their recipes and have it not turn out. Here's what they have to say about it:
The purpose of this book is to help you transition into a gluten-free lifestyle and also provide the tools you need to make informed dietary choices.

Nourishing Meals contains over 300 new whole foods recipes, as well as detailed information about health particularly relating to nutrition for conception, pregnancy, and childhood. You'll learn about the nutrients needed and how to best obtain them, as well as factors that can affect health during these critical stages, such as environmental exposure to chemicals. We also covered many of the causes of food allergies and sensitivities, and what you can do to help prevent them. And because raising a healthy child also involves making sure they actually eat nourishing food, we provided detailed information on raising healthy eaters from pregnancy onwards (yes, healthy eating habits actually begin in the womb!).

Before each recipe chapter you'll find information pertaining to that chapter and "10 Tips." For example, in the Salads and Vegetables chapter you'll find information on the vital phytochemicals in plants as well as ways to get your children to eat more vegetables. There are then 10 Tips for adding more vegetables to your child's diet. In the Dessert chapter we discussed alternatives to refined sugar and offered 10 Tips for using natural sweeteners. We hope that this will make the book more practical for you.

The book consists of vegan, vegetarian, meat-based, grain-based, grain-free, nut-free, nut-based recipes...pretty much the whole spectrum of eating....because there is no one way nor one perfect diet for everyone. Additionally, speckled throughout the recipes, you will find detailed nutrition tips to help you understand exactly why certain foods are beneficial for health!

Egg, Dairy and Wheat Free Bread Cookbook

I just saw a fabulous review of this bread making cookbook. The hardest thing I've found, is baking allergy friendly without eggs. If this is you, this cookbook sounds like it just might be the ticket. The blog of "Go Dairy Free" had this to say about  it, "Until I discovered her book, I didn’t anticipate baking bread products anymore for my husband, but Laurie has a gluten-, egg-, and dairy-free formula that works. I tested out a couple of the recipes and both results were stellar. In fact, I even started tinkering with one of the recipes, and couldn’t mess it up if I tried!"

So, What Can I Eat Now?!: Living Without Dairy, Soy, Eggs, and Wheat (Cookbook)

This is an interesting cookbook I just saw here.  It costs about $10. The writer is from Louisiana and has ideas for multiple food allergies including, soy, dairy, egg, and gluten. Here is what a review said,

"I was diagnosed with a gluten intolerance in December 2009. Over the last year, I've struggled to find recipes that wouldn't make me physically sick and send guests running from my house vowing to never return again for a meal. I'm not a cook and relied more than I should have on processed foods. The hardest thing for me has been finding gluten-free foods that please my palette.

Enter, "So, What Can I Eat Now?"

I had the pleasure of sampling Rhonda's food at the Phoenix Farmer's Market and I was sold. The food has flavor! After speaking with the author, I learned she was from Louisiana -- the culinary capital of the world as far as I'm concerned! Rhonda's recipes are not overwhelming to a novice cook, but bursting with flavor. It's introduced me to herbs and seasonings I'd never heard of, much less had in my cabinet.

I tried a couple of recipes before inviting friends over and was pleasantly surprised! From oven fried chicken to pea pesto & rice to apple cinnamon mini muffins to one of my favorites - twisted hummus, everything has been a hit.

If you have food allergies or just want to try a healthier diet that includes more whole foods, this book is a must have for your shelves."
